The number of processes that still take place on paper form is enormous. Information is collected on paper forms, then distributed further, to finally be recollected for manual processing. Workflows are a succession of individual actions that are supported electronically. A typical example is the approval of a holiday request, an expense account, or the final publication of a web page or document. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server already offers a number of integral workflows, but with a tool like Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer, power users can develop their own workflows without any knowledge of a programming language.

For developers there is of course Visual Studio in which extensive and complex applications can be integrated via code.

Forms can be designed with Microsoft Office InfoPath. SharePoint ensures the distribution of the forms, and also the supporting workflows, where necessary. Via InfoPath Forms Services, end-users can complete the forms without needing to have Microsoft Office InfoPath.
