Server Based Computing is a reaction to the proliferation and uncontrollability of local company networks. The concept is to centrally exploit the Server equipment of a company network, including all applications and company data.

This leads to easier and cheaper maintenance of the network and allows users to have applications and/or data at their disposal more quickly. Modifications, for example the addition of a new application, only need to be executed from one place.  
Another characteristic of the technique of Server Based Computing is that the data communication of the Servers en Workstations only uses limited capacity.

- deal with frequent updates of applications,
- also wish to use their company data or applications outside of the office with a proper performance;
