ILM is based on the idea that each data element knows its own 'life cycle'. Data is created and used actively. Then the information is used less and less until it remains available in the archives.

The life cycle of information depends on the process that uses this information, which application is used, who its users are and the possible legal status of that data. The same level of availability is not often required during the entire life cycle. During creation and active use the requirements will be much higher than later on in the life cycle. The importance for the operational management also plays a large role in this. Using ILM, data can automatically be placed in the most appropriate Storage platform based on criteria such as availability, output, functionality and price.
