The continuing success of server virtualization in the datacenter has brought IT infrastructure teams a new series of tools to more efficiently use server resources through consolidation, provide easier management of servers and increase the general availability of critical
IT services in the enterprise.

With the introduction of VDI, these tools are now reaching out to the leaves of your IT infrastructure: the end user’s desktop becomes a virtual desktop.

Key advantages such as centralized management, standardization, access from anywhere, efficient resource usage … translate into a flexible desktop that costs less to maintain.

Fortunately, it is not very hard to install a desktop operating system on a virtual platform: the principles of virtualization apply just as well to both servers and desktops. However, the trick is not only getting the most out of a virtual desktop infrastructure, but also to organize
it efficiently, in particular in times where you have to do more with less.

It is indeed a good idea to think twice about how you organize a virtual desktop infrastructure: there is a large variety of products and vendors that compose a complete VDI solution – so what product
fits your specific user needs the best? Should you go for a thin client deployment or provide a seamless overlay of applications inside virtual desktops onto your existing fat clients?

Due to the ease of deployment of virtual desktops, a single misconfiguration propagates to many virtual desktops, very quickly – so in order to efficiently perform the implementation, it is good to be as ready as possible for VDI.
