Do you use Canvas PowerApps? If so, I’ve got good news for you: thanks to a recent update, the app now has more functionalities, which were only available in Microsoft’s CRM/ERP platform Dynamics 365 before. This new version of PowerApps is called Model Driven PowerApps.
Why are these new options available now? Because the layer that makes certain functionalities possible in Dynamics 365 is now accessible for the Business Application Platform (BAP) as well. And PowerApps – along with some other platforms, such as Power BI – is part of this BAP.
Canvas PowerApps is focused on user experience. We add the screens first, then we configure elements such as colour, font, font size, layout and animation. After that, we link everything to the data centre.
In other words: the data centre is the core of the Model Driven PowerApps model. We define the entities, connections between entities, Business Process rules, forms, views, charts and other elements that make up the PowerApp.
The Canvas PowerApps model is useful in situations where you need a solution with complete freedom in the User Interface Design – and which can use data from over 230 different sources, such as Dropbox, Twitter, Trello and SharePoint. Canvas PowerApps is mainly focused on roles and tasks.
The Model Driven PowerApps model is a better option in situations that focus on the connection between entities and the relevant business processes.
Of course, there are scenarios where we combine both models in a complete solution. Think of leave requests, for example: the HR administrator will use a Model Driven PowerApp for this process, but for regular requests and looking up information, they’ll provide a visually attractive Canvas PowerApp.
The future looks bright, both for Canvas PowerApps and for Model Driven PowerApps. Thanks to the new update, we’ll be able to incorporate Canvas PowerApps elements into the Model Driven PowerApps model – and the inflexible perception of PowerApps will finally be a thing of the past!
