3 types of teleworkers: How to set up their new workspace

Now that the world is waking up from the standstill we’ve endured for the past months, it seems like the entire business world is rushing to catch up. In an adapted way, of course. Our daily physical contact with colleagues, customers and suppliers has been replaced by online meetings, online brainstorms, online workshops, online trainings and online webinars. In this blog post, you’ll discover the three types of teleworkers we’ve distinguished and read how you can organise online meetings that are adapted to their personal needs.  

The New Way of Working  

As an advisor, integrator and partner, we were in the front line as the new way of working gained ground due to the corona crisis. In the past months, we’ve helped many customers implement and embrace new online collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams, Zoom Meetings & Webinars and Mitel MiTeam Meetings at record speed. 

We’ve also noticed that a new phase has started: as the first wave of activation and implementation has calmed, businesses are starting to realise that our world will work differently from now on. The physical ‘on-site only’ meetings we’ve always been used to probably won’t happen anymore; online meetings are the new norm. After this crisis, ‘work’ will be regarded as something we do, rather than something we go to. 

New work, meeting and collaboration scenarios will emerge, and your co-workers will need to master these new work methods and tools. 

Online workers will spend a lot of time in online meetings, so they’ll need to be equipped with the right tools to make a professional impression when talking to external (and internal) contacts. Depending on the environment’s intensity, there are several technologies available that are perfectly suited to your colleagues’ new way of working. These tools will make sure that your teleworkers - and, by extension, your organisation – look professional when communicating with their contacts. 

Type 1: The sporadic teleworker  

The first type is the sporadic teleworker. For these workers, it’s important to able to conduct a quality online meeting at all times; they should always be clearly audible and perfectly visible to facilitate nonverbal communication. After all, your organisation’s professional image is partly determined by the audio and video quality of your co-workers during online interactions with customers, suppliers and external partners. This is why we advise you to provide your colleagues with a good, ergonomic headset or speakerphone which optimises their audio quality. Don’t forget to include a quality (often external) webcam as well – one that optimally adjusts the image lighting, sharpness and frame to help your colleagues stand out during online meetings. 

Type 2: The veteran teleworker  

Veteran teleworkers are already used to setting up their own Personal Video Conferencing System. Thanks to the various technologies available, they’ve got plenty of options to choose from. With their own Video Deskphone, they don’t need a computer and software to have crisp audio and video calls. You can also convert a standard monitor into a complete collaboration system simply by adding a ‘Collaboration Bar’. The built-in compute, camera, microphone and speakers turn it into an all-in-one home office video conferencing system. Luckily, as these technologies evolve, their prices drop, which makes them easily accessible for frequent teleworkers. 

Type 3: the Pro & Executive teleworker  

If we go one step further, we arrive in the home office of the Pro & Executive teleworker. This remote workplace is optimally equipped for efficient online meetings, collaboration sessions, webinars and trainings.  
An interactive monitor with collaboration software, video camera, microphones and speakers provides the ultimate telework experience. It helps efficiency, energy and creativity thrive in the home office – not just for the teleworker, but also for other participants in their online sessions.
