If you can communicate smoothly, it doesn’t matter where in the world you and you colleagues are. This was proven by Ahold Delhaize‘s 10,000+ employees in Serbia, Romania and Greece: in 2019, the supermarket multinational decided to roll out a responsive Valo Intranet platform for them. Xylos helped them execute the project from start to finish. “Valo is much more than just an Intranet platform. Ahold Delhaize’s store employees process over 200 internal documents every week, so it’s crucial for them to have access to one platform that centralizes and structures all information. “Without such a platform, there’s no fixed place for our colleagues to find their weekly work schedules. Looking for the correct schedule used to cost them a lot of valuable time”, Nemanja continues. “Our HR environment has its own application in our portal as well. It just takes a few clicks for our co-workers to ask a question or find their insurance documents, for example.”

Two-way communication works

In the field as well as behind the scenes, Ahold Delhaize’s employees are beyond excited about their new Intranet solution. “From now on, they can follow, comment and like our corporate news and newly-announced events on the homepage, they can share their own stories and they can watch high-resolution video trainings”, says Belgradian Nemanja Ković, Internal Communications Specialist at Delhaize Serbia. “Two-way communication is at the core of this project.”

“Our colleagues have a lot of stories to share,” Nemanja continues, “and with our Intranet blog, they now have an official channel to do so. It’s still a challenge to announce this feature to 3,000 colleagues in the right way, though”, Nemanja Ković jokes. 

Valo doesn’t just offer advantages for its end users, but for internal, stores and external communication staff as well. “I can easily track people’s surfing behavior on the platform, for example. Think of the number of visitors who look at the photo gallery on our homepage, or the number of colleagues who are involved in a certain event or working on a specific campaign. When you know what is interesting to them, you can create or adjust your communication, creating bigger hype and engagement.”, Nemanja continues.

Valo kick-off event

To let their end users get acquainted with the platform’s new functionalities, Delhaize Serbia organized its own Valo event on launch day. They handed out T-shirts, decorated the entire entrance hall with posters and branding, and employees could even participate in a contest in which they had to find certain information in the portal with the least possible number of clicks. “Our project went smoothly because we had a great user adoption plan to support our employees”, says Oliver Gensterblum, Senior Regional Domain Lead BeCSE at Ahold Delhaize.

More than technical standard routine 

“You know, the technical deployment of an Intranet solution isn’t the hard part. It’s a standard routine. Implementing all internal documentation in one portal, though – that’s a challenge. Especially if it needs to be clear and well-structured”, explains Thomas Vochten, Solution Advisor at Xylos. “We helped Ahold Delhaize upload and structure their existing documentation and gave them additional pointers on how to create extra content.”
